Up Your Human: Thriving in Recruitment in the Age of AI

Thriving in Recruitment with AI: The Robot 🤖 in the Room Isn’t Replacing You

Thriving in recruitment is getting trickier to define these days. There’s so much noise about AI right now. Depending on who you ask, it’s either here to save us from the boring bits or swoop in and take our jobs. But let’s be honest, if you’re not sure where you stand, or if you’re feeling a bit “AI-fatigued,” you’re not alone. 🫂

Over the last year, I’ve spoken with over 100 AI vendors (yes, really. I’ve taken one for the team! 🙃). So many claim their tool will make recruiters obsolete. But here’s what I’ve learned after all those demos, trials, and honest chats:

🤖 AI is brilliant at tasks, but rubbish at trust. That’s the golden rule.

So instead of asking, “Will AI replace recruiters?” (yawn 😴), we need to flip it to something more empowering:

“Which parts of my process can I hand over to AI so I can focus on being more human?”

Let’s dive in ☕️

TL;DR: Thriving in Recruitment with AI Means Upping Your Human

  • AI does tasks well. Humans build trust 🤝
  • Let AI handle the admin so you can focus on strategy, empathy, and intuition 🧑‍🎓
  • Know where AI fits in your process (and where it doesn’t)
  • One good tool and strong prompts are better than a dozen half-baked solutions 🚀
  • A recruiter using AI won’t replace you, but they will outperform you ✨

Up Your Human: The Secret to Thriving in Recruitment

You’ve heard me say this before: in a world flooded with AI-generated noise, your humanity is your biggest competitive advantage.

“Up your human” is about showing up as the person behind the profile:

  • Building a real personal brand 🎨
  • Growing a community 🌿
  • Being known, liked, and trusted, not just connected 🩵

Thriving in recruitment today means leaning into these human elements. Recruiters didn’t choose this profession for their love of admin, trust me on this, as I have firsthand experience! We decided to pursue a career in Recruitment because we’re good with people.

So let’s let AI handle the admin and get us back to the people stuff. The strategic, intuitive, trust-building stuff that no bot can do (yet!).

Where AI Fits (and Doesn’t) in the Recruitment Process

Here’s a breakdown of the 8 key stages of recruitment and how AI can help, or where it absolutely shouldn’t try.

1. Intake Meetings with Hiring Managers 💼

AI can: Pull salary benchmarks, generate market maps, and give a quick talent landscape pulse.

Recruiters must: Have the gutsy conversations. AI won’t say, “You’re not going to find a unicorn with 15 years of React experience on that ‘pony’ budget.”

2. Job Descriptions & Employer Branding 📍

AI can: Draft clean, SEO-friendly content.

Recruiters must: Add the heart. Tell the story behind the role, the quirks of your team, and why it matters.

3. Sourcing & Talent Discovery 🔍

AI can: Use Juicebox or Boolean-backed GPTs to surface standard profiles.

Recruiters must: Spot the hidden gems. See the hobbyist coder working in a coffee shop during the day, but is building incredible apps at night. That’s thriving in recruitment.

4. Screening & Shortlisting ✅

AI can: Filter CVs and handle application floods.

Recruiters must: Spot potential. Career pivots, resilience, unconventional brilliance, those are human reads that no robot can do.

5. Candidate Outreach 📢

AI can: Automate first messages and tone tweaks. Automated messages are best used when you have loads of people who have applied for one role and you need to sift through the responses.

Recruiters must: Build trust. Pick up signals. Keep the conversation alive even when the recruiting part is over.

6. Interviews & Assessments 🎬

AI can: Handle volume interviews (grad roles, etc.)

Recruiters must: Read the room and assess the level of the role. Assess cultural add. But remember, no bot can replace a recruiter in a C-suite headhunt initial call.

7. Workflow Automation & Admin 📆

AI should: Reformat CVs, schedule interviews, and update your ATS. Let it do the admin to allow you to spend more time with the humans – clients or candidates.

Recruiters win: Time. Use it to mentor, strategise, or to even take a lunch break without guilt 🍔

8. Onboarding & Retention 🏡

AI can: Send reminders, gamify onboarding, and automate emails.

Recruiters must: Handle the “wobble” during their notice period, where they fight counteroffer after counteroffer. Be the person who makes new hires stay.

Tools & Tips to Help You Start Thriving in Recruitment (with AI)

Let’s keep this practical:

1. Clean Your Data

  • If your ATS is messy, AI won’t save you. Fix the foundation first.

2. Start Small (but Smart)

  • One strong tool + solid prompt skills beats a dozen dashboards.

3. Learn to Prompt 🔄

  • AI’s output is only as good as your input. Read that sentence again.
  • Sharpen your prompting by enrolling on a course about Prompt Engineering. This is such a Game Changer to ensure you are getting the best results from whichever LLM you are using. Pop me an email if you want to do one of my Courses.

4. Stay Curious 🤔

5. Weekly Self-Check 🔎

  • Ask yourself: “Am I doing something today that AI could do for me?”
  • If yes, automate it. Then spend that time doing something only you can do.

Common Pitfalls (and How to Dodge Them)

  • Over-relying on AI: It’s your assistant, not your replacement 🚪
  • Buying too many tools: Most overlap. Focus on mastering one.
  • Forgetting the human: If your process feels cold, your candidates will too ❄️
  • Bad prompts = bad results: Garbage in, garbage out ♻️

Real Example: From Burnout to Balance ☕️

Recently, I chatted with a client of mine, who was drowning in admin and close to quitting. We implemented two small changes:

  • Added AI to draft outreach emails and schedule her interviews.
  • We then reinvested her saved time into mentoring her two managers in her business.

The result? Faster time-to-hire, happier candidates, a more successful team and one very relieved Business Owner 🌟

That’s thriving in recruitment through the smart usage of AI, not just surviving it. 💙

FAQs: Thriving in Recruitment in the Age of AI

1. What does “thriving in recruitment” really mean?
It means working smarter, not harder. Letting tech do the grunt work while you focus on building relationships and delivering value.

2. Will AI replace recruiters?
Nope. But recruiters who use AI will outperform those who don’t. It’s about augmentation, not replacement.

3. What’s the first AI tool I should try?
Any LLM. Get used to prompting using your real-life, real-time examples, or use cases, from what is happening on your recruitment desk at that point in time. The more we interact with generative AI, the more comfortable we will be with trying new tools.

4. Can AI really understand candidate potential?
Not yet. It filters based on rules. You see nuance. That’s your edge.

5. How do I write better AI prompts?
Be clear, specific, and give loads of context. I teach frameworks for this in my training.

6. Is using AI in recruitment ethical?
Yes and no. There is a lot of debate in this space, and I think there always will be. Hopefully, acts like the AI EU Act will go a long way to sort things like this out.

7. What if my team is resistant to AI?
Start small. Show the time saved. Share wins. Curiosity is contagious. Training can also help with this to show them what they are missing out on, because as humans, we don’t know what we don’t know, right?

8. How do I keep up with AI trends without burning out?
Set boundaries. Subscribe to one solid newsletter. Join one community. Don’t try to know everything about AI as it’s impossible with the speed of development these days.
