5 Job Interview Tips to Ace your next Interview (Without Sounding Like a Robot!)

Let’s be honest— job interviews can be nerve-wracking. But with the right preparation, you can walk in feeling confident, make a killer first impression, and (hopefully) walk out with an offer.

I always tell my candidates that preparation is key. That’s why I make sure they have all the details: the company’s website, the names of the people they’ll be meeting, and a gentle nudge to ‘cyber-stalk’ their interviewers. Yes, really. Understanding your interviewer’s background can help you predict their questions, tailor your responses, and even find a common interest to build rapport.

That said, over-preparing is a thing! You don’t want to sound like you’ve memorized a script. Stiff, robotic answers will make you sound unnatural and, frankly, forgettable. Interviews aren’t just about giving the ‘right’ answers—they’re about connecting, showing your personality, and proving you’re the best fit for the role.

So, how do you strike the perfect balance? Follow these five golden rules, and you’ll ace your next interview.

1️⃣ Arrive 10 Minutes Early—But Not a Second More!

There’s a sweet spot when it comes to arriving for an interview, and 10 minutes early is it. Any earlier and you risk sitting awkwardly in reception while the team mentally scores you out of 10. Too late? Well, you might as well turn around.

🚫 No excuses for being late. Ever.
🚫 No arriving 30 minutes early and looking desperate.

While waiting, avoid scrolling mindlessly on your phone. Instead, flip through a business magazine, review your notes, or—if you’re at home on a virtual interview—use this time to do some deep breathing and get in the zone.

2️⃣ Dress to Impress (But Not Like a Superhero!)

I’m all for expressing yourself, but this is not the time to channel your inner Wonder Woman (or Batman). You want to look polished and professional, not like you’re heading to Comic-Con.

👔 For the gents: A suit is always a safe bet. A tie? Yes, unless you know for sure that the company culture is more relaxed. A jacket? Optional, depending on the role.

👗 For the ladies: Black and white is a timeless, professional combo. Avoid: super-short skirts, plunging necklines, neon colours, and bright red lipstick that screams “Saturday night” instead of “Hire me.”

Pro tip: If in doubt, dress one level above what the company’s dress code suggests. It’s better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed!

3️⃣ Listen First, Answer Second—No Interrupting!

Interviews aren’t a race. You don’t get extra points for answering first. Listen carefully to the full question before jumping in. Some interview questions have multiple parts, and missing half the question won’t do you any favours.

💡 Top trick: Ask for a glass of water before the interview starts. If you need a moment to think, take a sip while you structure your answer. It’s a simple yet effective way to buy yourself time without looking flustered.

And if you are a Recruiter going for an interview – remember to mention that you have completed my Talent Sourcing Training – this always wins you Brownie Points!

4️⃣ Cut the Waffle—Get to the Point!

One of the biggest interview mistakes? Waffling.

🚫 Avoid long-winded answers.
🚫 Don’t ramble to fill awkward silences.

Here’s what you should do instead:
✔️ Give a direct answer.
✔️ Use examples from your previous/current role.
✔️ If they want more details, they’ll ask!

A golden rule? For every answer, try to include a brief real-world example. This makes your response more engaging and memorable.

5️⃣ Show Passion & Positivity (Nobody Likes a Negative Ned!)

If you don’t seem excited about the job, why should they be excited about hiring you?

✔️ Speak with enthusiasm.
✔️ Show a genuine interest in the company and role.
✔️ Smile—yes, even in virtual interviews!

Avoid badmouthing your previous employer, no matter how tempting it might be. Nobody wants to hire someone who comes across as bitter. Stay positive, passionate, and professional—it makes a huge difference.
