AI in Recruitment Isn’t Optional Anymore. But Panic? Totally Optional
If the words “AI in recruitment” still send a ripple of anxiety through your team, you’re not alone. I’ve spoken to recruiters from Cape Town to Canberra who are either quietly ignoring AI or poking it with a stick, as if it might bite. 🐍
Here’s the thing. AI isn’t here to take your job. However, if you ignore it, you might just hand yours over to someone who uses it more effectively.
Let me share what I covered in my recent discussion on the Talvin AI webinar. Real examples, practical advice, and a bit of tough love for recruiters still hiding behind “But I’m not technical.”
1. Sourcing Is a Mindset. So is AI 🧠
I kicked things off by reminding everyone: sourcing isn’t a tool. It’s a mindset. The same goes for AI in recruitment.
I recently spoke with a large recruitment agency in Australia where 35% of the team still refuses to open ChatGPT or Perplexity. Why? Because they’re convinced that using AI means they’ll be replaced.
Honestly, if your biggest contribution as a recruiter is formatting CVs and sending copy-and-paste emails, then yes, you should feel threatened.
But let’s be real. No one got into recruitment for the Love of Admin. We’re here for the people, the strategy, the chase. AI helps us do more of that. And less of the “please find attached” nonsense. 👌
2. AI Isn’t Magic. But It Is Efficient 🛠️
I save at least one or two hours a day using AI tools. And no, I’m not shelling out big bucks. 💰 I have the South African budget mindset, remember?
We don’t need expensive, custom-built tech to make a difference. A $20 ChatGPT subscription goes a long way. Especially if you:
- Build your own GPTs
- Learn how to prompt well
- Use AI for empathetic, personalised communication (not robotic spam)
If you’re not doing that yet, you’re not getting your money’s worth. Simple.
3. Where AI Has the Biggest Impact in Recruitment 🎯
Let’s talk workflow. AI in recruitment isn’t just about flashy job ads or tidying up CVs. It can support you across the entire recruitment process—if you know how to use it.
Here are the top places I’ve seen the biggest wins:
📝 Content Generation – Outreach messages, job posts, prepping candidates for interviews. Generative tools like ChatGPT are brilliant for this.
🔍 Screening & Filtering – Drowning in applications? Use AI voice screeners or CV filters. Just don’t throw CVs into a GPT and ask it to rank the candidates for you. (Please.)
📆 Automation & Admin – Email sequences, transcription, interview scheduling. All the bits of the job no one brags about.
I’ve tested many of these tools myself, and I keep an updated list on my AI tools page. I recommend you spend some time on this page and see what is available to you as a Recruiter.
4. The Problem Isn’t Tools. It’s Not Knowing What You’re Solving 🧩
This is where things usually go sideways.
One of the biggest mistakes I see? A leader signs off on a shiny new tool without asking the team: What do you actually need?
Next thing, you’re stuck, tied to a 3-year LinkedIn Recruiter contract, which most teams don’t need. And your team’s still grumbling about sourcing pain points or unresponsive candidates.
Before you invest in anything, ask:
- What does our actual workflow look like?
- What repetitive tasks could be automated?
- What tools do we already pay for, and are we using them properly?
If you can’t answer those questions, stop shopping. Start internal auditing. I have a cheat sheet of questions you need to be able to answer before you start even thinking about your AI Roadmap/Strategy in place. Send me an email (van@vanessaraath.com) if you would like a copy of this document.
5. Integration Matters More Than Hype 🔗
Vendors love promising their tools “do everything.” In reality, most of them don’t even talk to your ATS.
If your tech doesn’t play nicely together, you’re just adding more admin. Look for:
🧩 Tools that integrate with your ATS or CRM
🚀 Solutions that reduce manual work, not add more dashboards
📅 Month-to-month pricing and responsive support
Some tools, like SourceWhale, have evolved from simple email automation to include branding and sourcing. Others? Still stuck with tools that only do one thing…. poorly?
Choose wisely.
6. Voice AI: The Wild Card You Shouldn’t Ignore 🎙️
One of the most exciting developments lately is voice-based AI screening.
Talvin AI, for example, doesn’t just record candidate responses. It analyses tone, energy, and enthusiasm. That means you’re not just getting “yes” or “no”. You’re getting a read on how someone shows up.
Would I use this for C-suite searches? Definitely not. But for call centre roles or high-volume hiring? It’s a game-changer.
The future of AI in recruitment isn’t just about the CV. It’s about the conversation.
7. AI Doesn’t Replace Humans. It Makes Space for Them 🤝
Let’s be blunt. AI is fast. But it’s not flawless.
You’ll get false positives. You’ll miss a few gems. That’s why human oversight is essential. (And it’s not just me saying that. The EU AI Act insists on it.)
Use AI to filter, organise, or open the conversation. But don’t let it make the final call. Especially when someone’s livelihood is on the line.
We’re not here to automate empathy. We’re here to make time for it. 💙
8. So, What Do You Do With the Time AI Saves You? 🕒
This is the question no one seems to ask.
I use that extra time for better conversations, more client calls, and enjoy guest appearances on more webinars. (And yes, occasionally to photograph whales at the beach 🐋)
You might use yours to finally start that blog, reconnect with clients, or properly train your team.
Whatever you choose, the point is: use the time for high-value, human-first work. That’s where the real magic happens.
